The lessons

What surf lessons does Sandbar offer?

Three options. What separates them is how many days you spend in the water and how far you get.

To try it Student smiling next to her board under the palapas, before going into the water
1-Day Surf Lesson 1 day · 2 hours $55 USD per person

Single-Day Surf Lesson

One day in the water to find out whether surfing is for you. We start with ocean safety and theory. We move to the sand to learn basic techniques, and from there into the water to control the board safely and try your first waves.

Who it is for: You are curious and you want to try. You want to see what surfing is about and what it takes, without committing to a full camp.

To settle the basics Two students walking into the water with their boards to practice what they learned
2-Day Surf Camp 2 days · 6 hours $105 USD per person

Weekend Surf Camp

Two surf lessons designed to learn the most basic principles and to have enough time in the water to put what you are taught into practice.

Who it is for: You have the weekend, or two days back to back. You practice and build upon what you learn on the first day, while it is still fresh.

The complete program: the knowledge and the skills required to continue practicing on your own: ocean safety, board control, choosing and catching your wave on your own, and riding waves.

Who it is for: You have several days and you want to leave surfing on your own. It is the only option that aims for you to finish the camp practicing without an instructor's help.

Recommendation

Which surf lesson is right for me?

For most people, the 5-Day Surf Camp

If you have the week, the 5-Day Surf Camp is the only option that prepares you for surfing independently. Five lessons give you the time in the water to build ocean safety, board control, and the judgment to choose and catch your own waves.

Two days is the minimum for something to stick. The first day you get comfortable being on the surfboard. On day two, your body starts to feel comfortable getting to your feet and moving on the board. If the week is not an option, the Weekend Surf Camp is where to start.

If you only want to know what surfing is about, take the Single-Day Surf Lesson and decide afterwards.

How many days do I need to complete the 5-Day Surf Camp?

Six is ideal. It is five lessons, but they are more effective with one rest day in the middle.

  • Days 1–3Three lessons back to back: fundamentals, paddling, and getting to your feet on the board.
  • Day 4Rest. Your body takes in what it learned and your arms recover.
  • Days 5–6Two more lessons to refine and start choosing your own waves.

Frequently Asked Questions

Surf lesson FAQ

Which surf lesson is the best option for me?

It depends on your goal and how many days you have. If you just want to get on a board and see what surfing is about, the Single-Day Surf Lesson is your best option. If you have two consecutive days, then the Weekend Surf Camp. If you really want to learn how to surf properly and be able to surf on your own, then the 5-Day Surf Camp is your best bet.

Will I know how to surf after one lesson?

No, a single lesson is not enough for someone to learn to surf.

One lesson gives you basic control of the board and your first waves. To surf without help you need more days in the water.

How many surf lessons do I need?

It varies from person to person. The 5-Day Surf Camp is designed so you finish the week equipped to practice safely on your own.

How many days do I need to complete the 5-Day Surf Camp?

Six is ideal. The camp is five lessons, but it works better spread over six days so you have one rest day in the middle.

The ideal order is three days of lessons, a rest day, and two more days. The day off gives your body time to take in what it learned, and it shows when you get back in the water.

Why should I take surf lessons?

Surf lessons will help you develop the fundamentals necessary for you to surf safely and independently, and they shorten the time it takes to learn.

Do I need to know how to swim?

Yes, the surf lessons are in the ocean, and while we start in shallow water, for safety, you do need to know how to swim.
